The 11th Century (1001 - 1100)

Ethelred II (the Unready) - King of England (978 - 1016)

1002 - 13 November (St. Brice's Day) - Ethelred ordered the massacre of Danes living in England

1003? - Birth of Edward (the Confessor) - Sweyn Forkbeard invaded England (again)

1007: Danes bought off from England by Ethelred - Ship money first levied in England

1009: Danish invasion of England

1012: 19 April - St. Alphege (954 - 1012) martyred on Easter Sunday, on spot of St. Alfege Church in Greenwich.

1013: Sweyn Forkbeard invaded England (again) - Ethelred fled to Norway

1016: Death of Ethelred led to the Battle of Ashington (Essex) to decide his successor.

Edmund II (Ironside) - King (1016)

Ruled the South of the Kingdom after losing at Ashington but died shortly afterwards

Cnut - King of England (1016 - 1035)

Won at Ashington - ruled the north of the Kingdom but became monarch of all England on the death of Edmund.

1017: Cnut married Emma of Normandy (widow of Ethelred II)

1035: Death of Cnut - His illegitimate son HardiCnut (Harold I) became Regent.

Harold I (Harefoot) - King of England (1037 - 1040)

1040: Death of Harold I - Cnut legitimate son Harthacnut inherits

Harthacnut - King of England (1040 - 1042)

1042: Death of Harthacnut - his half-brother Edward inherits

Edward (the Confessor) - King of England (1042 - 1066)

1045: Edward marries Edith (daughter of Godwin, Earl of Essex)

1051: Earl Godwin

1066: 6 January - Death of Edward the Confessor - Harold (Earl of Wessex), his brother-in-law claims throne

Harold II - King of England (1066)

1066: 25 September - Harold defeats Norwegian invasion at the Battle of Stamford Bridge

1066: 14 October - Battle of Hastings on Senlac Hill - Harold slain. William I becomes king.

William (the Conqueror) - King of England (1066 - 1087)

1066: Appearance of Halley's Comet depicted on Bayeux Tapestry

1067: Anglo-Saxon revolt against the Norman's crushed. Work began on the Tower of London

1069: Malcolm III marries Margaret (English Royal Family) then invades England.

1070: Revolt by Hereward the Wake against William the Conqueror

1071: Revolt quashed - Norman conquest of England complete

1072: William the Conqueror invades Scotland

1079: New forest made a royal hunting ground by William the Conqueror

1085: Doomsday Book preparation begins

1086: Doomsday Book survey of land ownership in England

1087: 9 September - William I dies falling from a horse, William II succeeds

William II (Rufus) - King of England (1087 - 1100)

1095: First Crusade begins

1100: 2 August - William II killed by an arrow whilst hunting in the New Forest

Greenwich England is where East meets West at the Greenwich Meridian (0° Longitude); World Time is set Greenwich Mean Time and where the World millennium celebrations will take place.   The Millennium Dome closed on 31 December 2000.  But remember that the millennium didn't officially begin until 2001.

Greenwich lies on the River Thames, a few minutes by rail or tube, or a short river cruise from central London.  If you want to visit Greenwich and information on visiting London, England then see Greenwich Info.  There is the famous Cutty Sark to visit and the Royal Naval College.  Just down river is the Thames Barrier which is close to London City Airport

The Royal Observatory at Greenwich is in Greenwich Park along with the National Maritime Museum and the Queens House (which will stage an exhibition "The Story of Time" from 1 December 1999 until 24 September 2000).  For information on astronomy visit Greenwich Star

The London Marathon starts in Greenwich Park.

Greenwich has a long heritage; it was the birth place of King Henry VIII and his daughters Queen Mary (Bloody Mary) and Queen Elizabeth I (The Virgin Queen).  It has seen many famous visitors from Peter the Great through Charles Dickens to Bob Hope.  This and a lot more in Greenwich Past.
